Scholars and students have always been great travellers. Theofficial case for 'academic mob-ility' is now often stated inimpressive terms as a fundamental necessity for economic andsocialprogress in the world, and debated in the corridors ofEurope, but it is certainly nothing new.Serious students werealways ready to go abroad in search of the most stimulatingteachers andthe most famous academies in search of the purestphilosophy, the most effective medicine, thelikeliest road togold.
Mobility of this kind meant also mobility of ideas, theirtransference across frontiers, theirsimultaneous impact upon manygroups of people. The point of learning is to share-it, whetherwithstudents or with colleagues one presumes that only eccentrics haveno interest in being cred-ited with a startling discovery, or a newtechnique. It must also have been reassuring to knowthat otherpeople in other parts of the world were about to make the samediscovery or werethinking along the same lines, and that one wasnot quite alone, confronted by inquisition, ridi-cule orneglect.
In the twentieth century, and particularly in the last 20 years, the old footpaths of the wan-dering scholars have bee vasthighways. The vehicle which has made this possible has ofcoursebeen the aeroplane, making contact between scholars even in themost distant places im-mediately feasible, and providing for thevery rapid transmission of knowledge.
Apart from the vehicle itself, it is fairly easy to identify themain factors which have broughtabout the recent explosion inacademic movement. Some of these are purely quantitative andre-quire no further mention: there are far more centres oflearning, and a far greater number ofscholars and students.
In addition one must recognise the very considerable multiplicationof disciplines, particularlyin the sciences, which by widening thetotal area of advanced studies has produced an enormousnumber ofspecialists whose particular interests are precisely defined. Thesepeople would work insome isolation if they were not able to keep intouch with similar isolated groups in other coun-tries.序言
