　　本書(shū)是亞當(dāng)·斯密的倫理學(xué)著作，他一生中共修訂過(guò)六次。斯密從人類(lèi)的情感和同情心出發(fā)，討論了善惡、美丑、正義、責(zé)任等一系列概念，進(jìn)而揭示出人類(lèi)社會(huì)賴(lài)以維系、和諧發(fā)展的秘密。
    在本書(shū)中，斯密繼承了以《沉思錄》為代表的斯多葛學(xué)派的道德哲學(xué)思想，把“內(nèi)心平靜”而不是“物質(zhì)享樂(lè)”看作人生幸福的重要標(biāo)志，將人性中利他和利己這兩種本性有機(jī)地結(jié)合在一起，為之后出版的《國(guó)富論》奠定了道德哲學(xué)的基礎(chǔ)。《道德情操論》相比《國(guó)富論》給西方世界帶來(lái)的影響更為深遠(yuǎn)，它對(duì)于促進(jìn)人類(lèi)福利這一更大的社會(huì)目的起到了更為基本的作用，是市場(chǎng)經(jīng)濟(jì)良性運(yùn)行不可或缺的“圣經(jīng)”，堪稱(chēng)西方世界的《論語(yǔ)》。
