主要從事樹木年輪學、氣候學和生態(tài)學研究。在我國西北干旱半干旱地區(qū)開展了較為系統(tǒng)的樹輪學研究，主要學術貢獻如下：1)發(fā)現研究區(qū)樹輪寬度主要響應區(qū)域濕度和水文變化；并結合觀測和模擬研究探討了其生物學機制；2）重建了黃河上游近1200多年徑流變化，發(fā)現了歷史時期主要的干旱事件；3）利用樹輪記錄系統(tǒng)開展了PDSI濕度變化重建研究，并點面結合重建了研究區(qū)近幾百年到近千年的干旱變化歷史；4）開展了極端溫度的樹輪氣候學研究，重建了黃河源區(qū)的溫度變化，發(fā)現該區(qū)域最高最低溫存在非對稱變化現象；并探討了森林上線對氣候變化的響應。先后主持五項國家自然科學基金項目、一項973項目的課題、一項教育部“新世紀優(yōu)秀人才支持計劃”項目、一項教育部博士點基金項目和多項國際合作項目，參加了多項“973”項目和國家自然科學基金委重點項目等重要科學研究項目，是國家基金委“創(chuàng)新群體”先后三期的骨干成員。近年來在國內外核心刊物上發(fā)表研究論文114篇，其中在SCI收錄的刊物上發(fā)表65篇(第一作者11篇，通訊作者29篇),發(fā)表在一區(qū)和二區(qū)的SCI論文22篇。鑒于上述工作和成果，獲得多項省部級科技獎勵。
